Afghanaid is a British-registered international NGO, which has worked in Afghanistan for over 30 years. We assist community-driven processes that address the rights and fundamental needs of people in some of the most remote areas of Afghanistan, providing basic services, supporting development of rural livelihoods and responding to humanitarian emergencies. We are headquartered in Kabul, and operate 20 provincial and district offices across Badakhshan (north-eastern region), Samangan (northern region) and Ghor (western region), as well as a Marketing and Fundraising office in London. We employ around 160 personnel, 97% of whom are Afghans.

Job Summary:

The Water, Hygiene & Sanitation (WASH) trainer is expected to carry out the planned WASH trainings to the community members in the target district. The role of WASH Trainer will be preparation of the training materials and to conduct the project’s planned trainings to the community members. Also the WASH Trainer will be over seeing the Hygiene Promoters and assist them in their role of awareness raising sessions. Also the WASH Trainer will gather participant feedback as well as update participants on how their input has been handled.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Responsibilities:

The following are the key areas of responsibility for this position:

  1. Project Planning and Implementation:
  • Prepares and practices sufficiently in advance of training sessions in order to deliver trainings successfully.
  • Takes an active part in the revision and enrichment of training materials.
  • Develops training schedules as per the training modules/content.
  • Assists in designing pre-tests and post-tests to screen trainees before and after training sessions.
  • Effectively uses the required training materials/aids during training sessions.
  • Provides support to the provincial team in following up on Open Defecation Free (ODF) verification certification declaration ceremonies at the community level.
  • Oversees and provides technical support in the design, implementation and monitoring of appropriate WASH interventions in close cooperation with the Project coordinator and technical staff on the ground.
  • Acts as a specialist to prepare, manage and implement a variety of technical and administrative tasks related to the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of the Programme’s WASH outputs and outcomes.
  • Supports the development of WASH sector response plans and budgets and contributes to Afghanaid’s overall response strategy.
  • Develops and modifies technical standards for all WASH construction and hygiene promotion programming within emergency and early recovery contexts, adhering to humanitarian standards.
  • Builds capacity and knowledge of provincial and district staff in delivering WASH trainings and awareness campaigns.
  • Conducts hygiene, sanitation, community led total sanitation (CLTS), and other related trainings to project staff and target beneficiaries.
  • Assists the Knowledge, Attitude and Practice (KAP) survey team in conducting KAP household surveys at the village level and with data entry of KAP questionnaires into the database.
  • Prepares and reviews existing WASH information, education and communication (IEC) materials and generates a database of all these items.
  • Identifies gaps in IEC materials required in various trainings and public education campaigns.
  • Conducts a training needs assessment prior to designing any trainings.
  • Designs appropriate training materials for use in local community development work and for informal educational activities.
  • Assists community and school WASH committees in developing operational work plans to conduct public education campaigns and repair and maintain water supply systems.
  • Supports the identification of training needs for district WASH teams and provides technical support in training activities.
  • Conducts behavioural change training in communities on hygiene practices such as hand washing, water treatment, and latrine use.
  • Develops and submits accurate monthly work plans and reports to the Project Manager and Project Coordinators on delivered activities.
  1. Networking and Representation
  • Develops and maintains relationships and closely works with local WASH actors, including members of national and local government, the private sector, communities, NGOs and other related sectors.
  • Participates as the Programme Department’s WASH representative in WASH cluster meetings and other related meetings/workshops as required.
  1. Budget and Logistics Management
  • Prepares Supply Requests and Service Requests and ensures they are properly documented and carry the correct Account Code, Donor Code and Donor Budget Code.
  • Ensures that correct procedures are adhered to in procurement of materials and services and that each procurement process is well documented.
  • Ensures and certifies that there is no misuse of supplies procured for external events such as training programmes, advocacy workshops, and stakeholder meetings.
  1. Monitoring and Evaluation:
  • Ensures that there is a pre and post evaluation for every training event.
  • Prepares the training impact report for the project manager/coordinator.
  • Ensures that project beneficiaries and relevant stakeholders are oriented to Afghanaid’s Complaints Feedback Response Mechanism (CFRM) and AWAAZ.
  • Incorporates pieces on the impact and measurement of COVID-19 into training events
  1. Reporting
  •  Reports to the Project Manager on the appropriate implementation of project trainings as planned according to developed technical standards, schedules and timelines.
  1. Staff Capacity Building:
  • Conducts training needs assessments on project staff.
  • Organizes WASH training of trainers (ToT) sessions for project staff.
  1. Learning and Knowledge Management:
  • Shares training lessons learned and best practices with project staff.
  • Prepares learning/knowledge products, covering innovative approaches and good practices, to support overall WASH sector development.
  1. Risk, Security and Access Management
  • Ensures that the compliance and control environment is effectively managed by project staff and that our staff are safe.
  • In consultation with the PM and Security Colleagues, explores ways to resolve humanitarian access problems/issues.
  • Ensures that we have a good relationship with communities to promote humanitarian access and support smooth project implementation.
  • Regularly reports to the PM and head of security on safety and security issues.

Any other duties as and when assigned by the line manager, MD and/or Directorate.

Job Requirement:

PERSON SPECIFICATION

Education & Professional Qualification

Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in any of the following: Environmental Science Public Health or a related field associated with WASH and hygiene behavior change.

Work Experience

  • 5 years of work experience in a relevant field including with social development training design, lesson planning, development of IEC materials/teaching aids, and with training conduction, facilitation, monitoring and supervision.
  • Minimum of 3 years work experience specifically in WASH.
