Under the Mes Aynak Archaeological Project a large archaeological site dating between the 2nd and 6th century needs to be survey, excavated and recorded within a determined period of time. For this reason Archaeology Institute of Afghanistan is looking for National Archaeologists that have previous experience in the field of excavations, preferably from the Kushan/Buddhist period site. The archaeologists are expected to record their findings following the established methodologies already in place at the MAAP which will be provided and explained prior to any excavation. The candidate must possess the technical knowledge in the field of archaeological survey, documentation and research skills to enrich the scientific knowledge of cultural heritage in Afghanistan.
The proposed surveyor will be responsible of Survey, Research and GIS related issues, including the following:
Analyze survey reports, maps, and other data to plan projects
Consider construction costs, government regulations, potential environmental hazards, and other factors in planning stages and risk analysis
Perform or oversee soil testing
Test building materials, such as concrete, asphalt, or steel, for use in particular projects
Provide cost estimates for materials, equipment, or labor to determine a project’s economic feasibility
Use design software to plan and design transportation systems, hydraulic systems, and structures in line with industry and government standards
Perform or oversee, surveying operations to establish reference points, grades, and elevations to guide construction
Present their findings to the public on topics such as bid proposals, environmental impact statements, or property descriptions
Manage the repair, maintenance, and replacement of public and private infrastructure
Organize the tasks and prepare detailed work plan (Weekly, Monthly and Annual)
Coordinate several Archaeology and engineering survey teams and provide assistance
Coordinate the members in providing GIS facilitations
Participate in review of technical documents and drawings related to Site and GIS
Assist team of Archaeologists on their site after giving them all necessary information on the purpose and extends of the task;
Prepare assessment and analysis of the site’s particulars, including those of difficulties that can be encountered to complete the tasks;
Reviewing daily, weekly and monthly progress report of team members
Coordinate survey on related issues and internal divisions, security team and other required entities and individuals
Preparation of comprehensive technical and meeting reports
Performs other duties as assigned
The Architect shall report to Site Manager as his/her direct supervisor and the Director of Archaeology Institute of Afghanistan.
Minimum of BSc in related field.
Academic and/or actual experience of field works will be appreciated.
At least4 years’ experience of Architect in the field;
Extensive knowledge/experience and skillful use of Total Station, Theodolite, level DGPS , GPS and other advance survey instruments;
Capability of performing topographic survey, setting out of projects, calculating cut and fill and preparation of site development plans;
Knowledge and experience in skillful use of computer and its relevant software’s, such as GIS, AutoCAD Civil 3D, , MS office , MS project, GIS and other related software’s;
Knowledge of drafting survey data in plans, profiles, section etc.
Knowledge of written and spoken English and national languages.
The consultant will be selected in accordance with the procedures set out in the World Bank Guidelines: Selection and Employment of Consultants by World Bank Borrowers (revised Jan 2011).
