Job Summary

Under the Mes Aynak Archaeological Project large amount of archaeological material dating between the 2nd and 6th century are being uncovered. The tasks required from the conservator include, but are not limited to, working primarily in the conservation of unbaked clay sculptures (some painted) being uncovered in-situ The material requires to be conserved in order for it to be removed and transported to a secured location where they will be restored and preserved for museum display. Moreover, the conservator will also work in painted murals, following the same process of conservation in-situ prior to its removal for restoration and preservation at a specialized laboratory. Work off-site include, but are not limited to, the restoration of pottery, metal objects and other specialized finds.

Duties & Responsibilities

The Art Conservator of the project has the following duties and responsibilities:

The specialist will need to conserve and preserve wooden, unbaked clay, metal and pottery objects with qualified chemicals used in these processes.

The Conservator will need to conserve centuries-old murals in-situ and prepared the conserved material to be removed from the site.

The specialist will require to conserve and restore objects so that the original characteristics will be maintained.

Experience and ability to work in teams on the particular technical area.

Ability to work without close supervision and take initiative in his/her own area of responsibility.

To prepare a working plan for the completion of the tasks commanded, expressed in timetables and including all materials required for its completion.

Capacity to prepare regular reports in English language (written and with photographic records) on the work being carried out.

The Conservator will need to reside within the premises of the excavation project. Work will be carried out in the field where sculptures and other non-movable materials will need to be conserved prior to their removal for restoration. All other movable material will need to be worked within the camp premises, where laboratories for this purpose have been established.

Job Requirements


A bachelors degree in the fields of conservation, preservation or restoration.

Proven experience of over 5 years in the field of work required.

Proven capacity in the use of chemical material for the conservation and preservation of unbaked-clay objects, metal objects, painted murals and objects, and pottery assemblage, needs to be properly attested in the CV.

Proven experience in the conservation and restoration of antique sculptures made of unbaked clay.

Proven experience in the conservation and restoration of antique painted objects and murals (over unbaked clay surfaces).

Experienced in working at archaeological sites.

Knowledgeable in the preparation for removal of large antique and fragile objects.

Preferably with Buddhist iconography experience.

Excellent writing and communication skills in English.

Knowledge of Farsi or Dari would be an advantage.

Experience of working in Afghanistan or in the region will be an advantage.

Basic computer skills relevant to the position.
