Operation Mercy is an international relief and development organisation with over 20 years of experience. We are currently working in Central Asia, Middle East and North Africa by serving the poor and marginalized through community development and humanitarian aid projects.
Major Goal of the Position:
Assist the Publications Manager in all work relating to publishing Rahmat books so that Rahmat Publications produces high quality books for distribution.
Key Result Area (KRA) 1: Publishing Rahmat Books. The Publications Assistant will:
a) Assist the Publications Manager to select book titles to be published.
b) Assist the Publications Manager to make time-line and lay out publication process for each publication.
c) Assist the Publications Manager to research ‘in-house’ and/or outside office for publications as approved by Rahmat project manager
d) Type, write and/or translate publications as approved by project manager.
e) Assist the Publications Manager to contact translators, illustrators, designers and editors and ensures that their work is done to a good standard and on time.
f) Make contracts of outside translators, illustrators, designers, editors and other contractors.
g) Assist the Publications Manager to ensure that each book has at least one outside edit and a final ‘in-house’ edit.
h) Assist the Publications Manager to ensure that appropriate forewords are written for each book.
i) Assist the Publications Manager to ensure that each publication is laid out and designed to full satisfaction of Rahmat project manager.
j) Assist the Publications Manager liaison with printer to ensure pre-print text is prepared to full satisfaction for printer.
k) Assist the Publications Manager to prepare publications for reprint as they are needed.
l) Be able to locate and access all files for the publishing of books, both soft copies and hard copies.
m) Manage Rahmat Publications Facebook Page.
Key Result Area (KRA) 2: Administration for Publications. The Publications Assistant will:
a) Assist the Publications Manager to establish, develop and maintain relationships with current stakeholders and prospective stakeholders for Rahmat Publications. Stakeholders may include intellectuals, writers, cultural institutions, Ministry of Information and Culture, National Library and Ministry of Education.
b) Make telephone calls and in-person visits to stakeholders and take part in Cultural and Literature seminars.
c) Assist the Publications Manager to advocate, explain and support Rahmat Publications activities and values to stakeholders.
d) Schedule and confirm visits outside the office to minimize wasted time and loss of fuel.
e) Record pertinent stories, observations and feedback from stakeholders in the monthly narrative report.
Key Result Area (KRA) 3: General Rahmat Office. The Rahmat Publication Manager will:
a) Develop a strong relationship with all coworkers and beneficiaries, seeking to be an example in teamwork, self-sacrifice, positive outlook and integrity.
b) Ensure travel plans outside Kabul and/or unusual locations are approved by Rahmat project manager at least two weeks before departure.
c) Maintain an attitude of learning that continuously seeks to grow in professional skills and language learning and cultural understanding of the target group and co-workers.
d) Prepare reports as requested by the Rahmat project manager.
e) Perform any other duties as directed by the Rahmat Publications Manager
Minimum of Bachelor degree in literature, journalism or other relevant studies.
Non-negotiable:
Very good inter-personal skills, ability to express his thoughts clearly
Friendly, kind and able to communicate with people of all cultures with respect
Good speaking, reading, writing and typing ability in Dari
Good speaking, reading, writing and typing ability in Pashto
Good speaking, reading, writing and typing ability in English
Good computer skills
Able to travel outside Kabul province for survey and feedback of Ramat books.
Strong interest in building responsible citizenship in Afghanistan
Decent, respectable appearance
Honest and hard-working, even without direct supervision
Negotiable:
Good speaking, reading, writing and typing ability in Pashto
