Job Summary

To originate, research, prepare, produce and present items, packages, interviews, discussions, or complete programmes, background analysis and features and report in the field. To ensure that any material for which the post holder is responsible meets the standards required by the BBC. Broadcast Journalists are expected to have read and understood the BBC's Editorial Guidelines.

Duties & Responsibilities

Broadcast Journalists may work mainly on news (TV, digital & social platforms and radio) and occasionally on features and current affairs programmes. Features and current affairs programmes might cover areas such as culture, documentaries, political discussions, profiles, music, or youth issues.

1. To research, write, translate, edit or produce items, stories or programme material

2. To find contributors and interviewees as well as other sources of material, appropriate to the required specification whilst maintaining professional journalist standards of accuracy, impartiality and adhering to the BBC's Guidelines. To perform the duties of interview producer or guest booker.

3. To be responsible for a moving story, amending and updating material as required. To think through and around editorial problems, developing realistic alternative strategies and approaches.

4. To offer ideas for stories and items, programmes and series, attending pre-programme and planning meetings as required. To suggest new angles and formats on existing stories in order to bring them to life for the audience.

5. To contribute to newsgathering activities, planning, and research.

6. To understand the Service's strategy and to suggest ideas appropriate to its distinctive style and content.

7. All Broadcast Journalists may be required to travel outside Kabul on short reporting trips and assignments and to spend longer periods of time in the target area.

8. To undertake pre and post production work, live and pre-recorded content. After appropriate training, use a range of video, audio & digital equipment and information technology to research, write, assemble, edit and deliver programmes in the appropriate medium, to the highest professional standards.

9. To perform in front of camera with or without a script, conduct interviews and chair discussions, live or pre-recorded.

10. To voice and edit packages.

11. To help produce graphics in collaboration with graphic designers .

12. To be prepared to show flexibility and take on other roles required by the SBJ in response to the needs of the service.

13. All Broadcast Journalists may be required to work with TV& online teams on a multi-media basis and to have the ability to work across a range of skills and in a flexible manner, and to carry out these responsibilities in accordance with the BBC’s overall standards and values.

14.To observe and carry out any requirement outlined in the BBC News health safety and security policy and specifically to conduct risk assessments when appropriate.

15. To be familiar with different technical systems, including news production systems, and to show a willingness to learn to operate new technology systems and to be able to adapt to different working methods.

16. To help with multimedia production across the Persian Service. This could mean reversioning material for radio, television and online.

Job Requirements

-
Fluency and up to date knowledge of spoken and written modern Farsi, as first or equivalent language and the ability to type quickly and accurately.

2. Fluency in English including complete comprehension of written and spoken English and the ability to communicate effectively.

3. Substantial recent experience as a journalist, relevant to the target area, with a good knowledge of production techniques.

4. Ability to write creatively in an engaging manner, adapt, produce and translate with accuracy, clarity and style appropriate to differing audiences and forms of media suitable for multimedia output.

5. Good keyboard/basic computer skills and the ability to acquire technical skills and to operate technical equipment is essential. Familiarity with the Internet and an awareness of the potential of new technology is also essential.

6. A good broadcasting voice and the ability to acquire the appropriate presentation style.

7. Wide and up to date familiarity with the areas to which the Service broadcasts (Afghanistan, Iran, Tajikistan ) and an in-depth understanding of the area’s history, politics, social issues and culture as well as the changing needs of the audience. An extensive knowledge of the media situation in the target area.

8. A good knowledge of, and interest in, international current affairs, particularly insofar as they affect the target areas.

9. A demonstrable interest in working in a multimedia environment and in encouraging audience involvement. A demonstrable interest in online ( digital and social platforms ) and how to exploit it for the BBC's purposes.

10. A thorough understanding of the editorial aims and policies of BBC journalistic output and a willingness to adopt BBC Values.

11. The ability to work fast, accurately and under pressure.

12. A committed, motivated, energetic and enthusiastic approach to work.

13. - To be able to work away from base - filming and on outside broadcasts.

14. - Knowledge of the law as it applies to journalism.

15. - An awareness of BBC policy on Health and Safety and Security.
