National Cancer Control Program (NCCP) is the only lead coordination body responsible for delivering the cancer control services through three bases in Afghanistan.
1. The Jamhuriat Base with providing the medical oncology services with OPD and IDP. Surgical Oncology services with OPD and IDP, oncology drugs, Diagnoses and Radiological cancer services and cancer registration with both hospital and community base cancer registration and regular supply.
2. The Balkh Base with the medical oncology, diagnosis services and regular supply.
3. The Hirat Base with the medical oncology and diagnosis services and regular supply.
The NCCP from 2015 through 2020 has been provided totally 71000 cancer patients have been treated where 60981 only received the OPD services and 10019 were IPD patients.. The most common types of cancers are that of breast, oesophagus, stomach, lip/oral, cervix and lung. Between 70 and 100 patients visit the outpatient department each day. The patients include those who are already diagnosed with cancer in other centres and are mainly under chemotherapeutic treatment. In addition, some patients visit the department with advanced stage of their disease which require palliative care.
NCCP has 60 beds in Jamhuriat Hospital, 15 beds in Hirat and 15 beds in Balkh provinces, where IPD and OPD oncology services are provided to cancer patients.
NCCP is committed to spread the oncology services to three other regions too, Ningrahar, Kandahar and Baghlan provinces in 2021.
Purpose of Assignment
The objective of the assignment is to lead the medical oncology team and to provide diagnosis, treatment and palliative care services to cancer patients at the cancer department. In addition, the medical oncologist is responsible for training of Afghan doctors working in the department.
Job Summary
The Chief Medical Oncologist is responsible for leading the medical oncology team and providing diagnostic, treatment, and palliative care services to cancer patients at the newly established cancer department. In the OPD, she/he will be providing consultation to patients visiting the department including ordering various types of exams/tests and prescribing medicine. Moreover, she/he will be in charge of Day Care Unit where patients usually go under chemotherapy.
1) Lead Medical Oncology services (OPD and IPD)
2) Manage OPD and IPD patients assessment
3) Provide treatment to cancer patients
4) Provide palliative care to cancer patients
5) Identify and manage side effect symptoms from therapy
6) Manage acutely unwell oncology patients, both treatment and disease complications.
7) Provide medical oncology input to gynaecological and surgical oncology cancer units/patients
8) Lead the morning reports and rounds in the Inpatient Department
9) Be responsible consultant for inpatient care of medical oncology patients
10) Assist with development of medical oncology curriculum
11) Assist with development of medical oncology training program
12) Responsible for the training and supervision for all junior medical staff
13) Assigning junior doctors to various clinical and academic tasks
14) Undertake continuous medical education (CME) under the auspices of the Fellow of American College of Physicians and/or Royal College of physicians
15) Should be willing to work in a multi-disciplinary team, whenever required.
16) Assist with development of national cancer control strategy
17) Other duties and responsibilities relevant to the position as assigned by the director/manager
