DAI/AVCiLivestock, Multi Location
The Afghanistan Value Chains – Livestock (AVC-Livestock) is a USAID-funded program expected to run through June 2023. AVC-Livestock utilizes a market systems approach to strengthen and facilitate key transactions at either end of the farmer in targeted value chains - the commercial vendors of the goods and services that farmers need to grow higher volumes of quality products, and the processors and traders who purchase farmers’ harvests. AVC-Livestock is a market-driven, private sector-focused program that aims to sustainably strengthen the dairy, poultry, honey, red meat, and fiber value chains throughout Afghanistan resulting in increased incomes, employment, and productivity throughout targeted value chains.
Karimzai Dairy is an Afghan-owned dairy processing company that is officially operating with a valid license from the concerned authority of the government of Afghanistan. The firm is located at Farm-e-Hada, Behsood district, Nangarhar province of Afghanistan. The firm is having its own farm to provide milk for its production purpose as well as collect milk from individual dairy farmers of surrounding neighborhoods and districts in particular from the Surkhrod, Chaparhar, Ghanikhil, and Rodat districts of Nangarhar province.
The firm has equipped its operating system with a number of technical and administrative staff as well as required machinery including but not limited to the milking parlor, total mixed ration machine (TMR), chopper machine, dairy herd weighing scale, reception tank, milk chiller, cooling tank, milk batch pasteurizer, culture mixing tank, yogurt cap filling machine, pouch filling machine, and cream separator to perform milk processing and dairy farm operations.
The firm’s products are mainly Milk and Yogurt. The final products are delivered to the whole sellers as well as retailers of Jalalabad city to finally be consumed by the end-users.
The company’s vision is to enlarge its operations, business, and market coverage. To achieve this goal, the initial steps require technical training to build the firm’s staffs’ technical capacity in standard dairy processing as well as the linked milk producers who have very limited knowledge of hygienic milking, animal feeding, housing, common animal diseases management, and milk transportation resulting low income and sometimes unbearable loss. To overcome this challenge, the company has requested the AVC-Livestock project to hire a dairy processing expert to train its technical staff on the overall dairy processing management including workplace hygiene and sanitation, improved supply chain management, standard milk processing, and products quality assurance, and dairy cattle farm management. This training will enable the firm to produce and supply healthy dairy products to the end consumers and compete with the low-quality imported dairy products in the local market.
The main objective of this proposed assignment is to provide technical support and training to Karimzai Dairy Company technical staff, enhancing their knowledge and technical skills on standard dairy processing management to improve the level of quality and quantity of the dairy products and dairy cattle farm management practices.
Tasks include but are not limited to the following:
• Conduct a quick assessment of the Karimzai firm to find strengths and weaknesses of the firm in dairy cattle feed production
• Conduct a comprehensive assessment of the firm’s technical staff, facilities, and products safety,
• Develop a capacity building plan and training materials based on the finding from the assessment that may include processing techniques, bio-safety and bio-security, products diversification, hygiene and sanitation, and other relevant topics
• Train the firm’s staff on proper usage of existing types of machinery and other frequently used dairy equipment in the processing center.
• Develop SOPs for milk supply chain management, design dairy farming manual, and a record-keeping system.
• Provide technical support (coach, mentor, advice, and train) to the Karimzai Dairy management and technical staff with regards to hygienic milking, animal feeding, housing, milk transportation, milk collection, dairy production, dairy processing, labeling, and dairy marketing for farmers training purposes
