Job Summary

The NATO (Force Protection) offices and posts within HKIA north including but not limited to Entry Control Points (ECP’s)
HKIA North is the NATO base attached to the International Airport. This base is occupied by several NATO militaries at any one time. The location is secure and is used as an entry point and exit point for most NATO personnel operating in Afghanistan in support of the government.

Duties & Responsibilities

You are to accurately translate all verbal communication between the force protection battalion (Turkish Forces – English + Turkish) and partner nation’s personnel and locals. You are not to add or omit any part of what is said and you are to communicate the emotions of both parties but mindful not to include your own. You are not to communicate anything that you have translated or interpreted to any third party without the express consent of Turkish forces and partner nation’s personnel.

Tasks include;

Interpreting daily activities in the Force Protection HQ.

Whispered interpretation for meetings.

Interpreting for Turkish military at ECP’s.

Translate and back-translate documents and power point as well as other written communication tasks. This will be conducted on a computer so typing skills are a necessity.

Assist prepare and translate materials into the target language.

Work according to a shift pattern with linguist colleagues.


Working pattern
Typically, you will rotate between different duty stations within HKIA where possible. Linguists will be working alongside the Force Protection Battalion (Turkish forces) on HKIA. There will be no requirement to work outside of HKIA currently.

Hours of work
You will be expected to work up to 12-hour day within a 24 period; however a normal working day is;

Saturday to Thursday: 0730 – 1930

Fridays: off
You must be prepared to work evenings, or through the night when the operational situation calls for it. Evening and night work will only be once every so often and according to a schedule.

Time off
Linguists accrue 2-days’ unpaid vacation for every full month they have worked. You must work at least 2 full months before you request a vacation day. A vacation request must be submitted via the online timesheet system to AHG, and in person to thebigword manager/supervisor. This may or may not be granted depending upon the availability of your chosen days and any current operational requirements.

Confidentiality
Any translation or interpreting tasks will remain confidential and information gained from this work must not be passed to any third parties. This also includes fellow linguists.

Dress
You are expected to wear clothes suitable for a military context in order to meet the conditions you will be expected to operate in, e.g. trousers, long shirts, jackets and robust boots suitable for terrain. The clothes should be a neutral color.
Should it be deemed necessary, you may also be issued Military Pattern Clothing and equipment for use at work. Should you leave your role for any reason, you will be expected to hand back all of this clothing and equipment. Any item missing at the time of end of your contract, you will be billed and loose the correct amount of money to replace the item from your final salary.
