Work as a nurse in a trauma hospital closely under the supervision of the Nurse expatriate. For that, the main activities will be:
• Reception and guidance and patient;
• Keep observation sheet and register up to date;
• Patient care;
• Nursing procedures (injections, infusions, catheters, dressings, ...);
• Pain management;
• Management of materials, compliance with hospital hygiene rule;
• Communication: ensuring all needed patient information is handed over to the next nursing shift;
• For defined nurses, work in the Operation Theatre and/or Emergency Room and/or Intensive Care Unit.
1. Respects general rules
• When on the job, the scrub wears surgical scrubs, cap, mask, and—when the operation is over—non-sterile gloves for counting gauzes.
• Performs antiseptic handwashing between each operation.
2. Receives patient in operating room
• Familiarizes him/herself with patient chart.
• Verifies the patient’s identity and signature proving consent to surgery.
• Asks about potential allergies.
• Reassures patient, if necessary.
3. Prepares operating room before bringing in new patient
• Ensures availability of tubs around the operating table, and empties them, if necessary.
• Prepares all the instruments and equipment for the operation.
• Checks that equipment is working properly (suction, electrosurgical unit, etc.).
• Anticipates which equipment the surgeon might need.
• Check sterile items: expiration dates, integrity of wrapper, and TST control spots.
• Fills in the operating room log, affixing sterilization control spots.
• Records the gauze count before the operation begins.
• Uses only one tub in a corner of the OR for papers and other waste.
• Makes sure that the anesthetist has his/her own trash can.
• Makes sure the entire team moves about the operating room without a breach in asepsis.
4. Sets up the patient
• Sets up the patient according to the type of surgery.
• Verifies the proper positioning of the patient on the operating table.
• Checks the supports.
• Ensures patient safety througout the operation.
5. Helps the scrub and surgeon during surgery
• Opens all packs, observing aseptic technique.
• Anticipates surgeon’s requests.
• Assists the scrub.
• Responds to requests for additional equipment.
• Monitors entry to the OR, limiting it to necessary personnel.
• Makes sure that all OR personnel respect asepsis throughout the operation.
• Counts all gauzes and needles before the surgical site is closed. Wears non-sterile gloves for counting.
• Makes sure that all equipment and gauzes added during the operation are included in the final count.
• Informs the surgeon and scrub of the final count.
• Dresses the surgical site with the scrub, and monitors the proper functioning of drains, catheters, etc.
• Helps the scrub disconnect the connections.
6. Prepares patient to leave the operating room
• Helps the team transport the patient from the OR to the recovery room.
• Transmits information about the patient to the recovery room nurse.
7. Collection
• Empties the trash cans and ensures that they are decontaminated and cleaned.
• Collects the instruments and transports them to the sterilization room.
• Verifies that no equipment or needles have been left in the surgical drapes.
• Puts linen in the tub or bag provided for this purpose.
9. Monitors and participates in OR cleanup when the operation is over.

ï‚§ On request perform any other additional duties given by the immediate supervisor in order to allow the organisation to function optimal

The responsibilities mentioned above are not exhaustive and other work can be required according to the needs of the mission. This job description defines the guiding rules and principles specific to the post which must be respected when carrying out the abovementioned tasks and responsibilities.

This job description can be modified according to the evolution of work.
Working hours: According to the shift. Monday to Friday: 08:00 to 12:30 and 13:30 to 17:00
This schedule may be modified according to the seasons and special events (i.e Ramadan)
- Nurse diploma;
- Experience in a similar position is an asset;
- Experience in an international organisation, NGO is an asset;
- Basic English level oral and written, Good Dari oral and written, Pashtu is an asset;
- Very organized person able to plan his/her work in advance, autonomous and rigorous;
- Motivation to work in an international/inter-cultural context and humanitarian and team spirit.
