WORK CONTEXT / BACKGROUND:
The position is located in World Vision Afghanistan HRT office.
Maternal and Under-5 Nutrition and Child Health Project (MUNCH) project is a three year initiative whose goal is to meet basic health needs and reduce vulnerability of the people in Western Afghanistan, with a focus on women and girls in three Western provinces of Herat, Badghis and Ghor. The project will achieve this through 1) enhancing healthy nutritional practices by mothers, new-borns and children under five, and 2) increasing equitable and gender sensitive health services to mothers, new-borns and children under five. The target population for this project is nearly 2 million people in three provinces.
PURPOSE OF POSITION:
This is a full-time, grant-funded Nutrition Assistant position based in Herat. The Nutrition Assistant will be responsible to assisting Nutrition supervisor the day to day Nutrition activities of the project. He/ she will be responsible for assisting planning, reporting and supervising daily field activities. He / she will supervise at least 5 technical staff. The candidate should be highly motivated and use a lot of initiative to ensure the project activities are accomplished. He will be responsible to follow up that the relevant stakeholders are part of the project implementation and that relevant collaboration has been undertaken to avoid any form of drawback to project implementation. He/she will have to work closely with the Nutrition supervisor /nutrition department to ensure standards of project activities are compliant with requirements of the ministry. S/He will also assisting to coordinate the relevant nutrition data collection and in collaboration with the M & E Field Officer ensure that the data is appropriately captured and shared as planned.
ROLE DIMENSION / DESCRIPTION TIME SPENT
1. Project Supervision and Evaluation 30 %
Coordinate closely with the Nutrition Supervisor to ensure timely implementation and evaluation of the project activities.
Take part in nutrition related training, and deliver to the communities.
Assist nutrition supervisor on carrying out of the nutrition interventions ( BFHI, TTC, PD Hearth, IYCF, and other nutrition activities)
Assisting Nutrition supervisor to ensure that proper community development practices and “Do No Harm” practices are incorporated and upheld throughout the planning and implementation of the project.
In close conjunction with Community Development Workers conduct community awareness on benefits of dietary diversification.
Facilitate the holding of cooking demonstrations for locally available foods.
Assisting Nutrition supervisor to identify high risk communities, provide education and promote use of micronutrient powder.
Assisting nutrition supervisor to supervised staff understand and implement the concept of gender mainstreaming in all project activities.
Travel regularly to all project sites to ensure proper implementation and quality of project activities.
2. Reporting and Administration 20 %
Assist Nutrition Supervisor on compiling data related to nutrition activities
Ensure that monitoring and information management tools are up to date and contain all relevant information.

Follow up the security department advice on daily security situation and adjust travel plans as required.
Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:

Education: Nurse/Medical Assistant (Graduate of a recognized Medical training institute) or its equivalent. Essential
Knowledge & Skills: Local language and reading and writing in English Essential
Knowledge of maternal and child nutrition, and diseases prevention Essential
Knowledge or experience in BFHI, TTC, IYCF, CMAM is preferred Preferred
Experience: At least one or two years’ experience in health and nutrition activities and coordinating with other NGOs, UN and Government. Essential
Knowledge of and adherence to the Sphere standards and NGO Code of Conduct. Preferred
Cross-cultural sensitivity, flexible world view, emotional maturity and physical stamina. Desired
Work Environment:
Shared offices in the provinces. Communication and other required work equipment and supplies provided and shared with other projects.
Team-house accommodation is provided in the province if employee is not from that province.
Excellent analytical/problem-solving skills and detail orientation. Preferred
Thorough knowledge of MS Office Essential
