The Program Assistant – Food Technology will work under the supervision of the Food Technology Program Manager to support and implement a range of activities related to development of a BS program in food technology in the Herat University Faculty of Agriculture (HUFA). The position is located in Herat, Afghanistan. The food technology program is entering its third year of development, and will initiate a Bachelor of Science program in the 2017 academic year. While the HUFA lack basic resources like internet access, functioning computer labs, libraries, etc., three resident faculties have received significant training in food technology and four others are in India studying for MS degrees in postharvest/food technology. The Faculty Steering Committee (FSC) completed an industry assessment and has begun establishing a food technology advisory board. The person in the position of The Program Officer – Food Technology will need to be both innovative and flexible in supporting the development of the BS program in food technology.
Activities, to be conducted in collaboration with the Food Technology Steering Committee (including both Purdue and HUFA members) are:
1.Arrange faculty steering committee and industry advisory board meetings and take meeting minuets
2.Update Food Technology lab inventory and report to Food Technology program manager on monthly basis
3.Assist in developing manuals for lab experiments required for Food Technology BS program
4.Make sure that all safety measurements are applied while students are carrying out experiments in Food Technology lab particularly in the microbiology and chemistry section
5.Play a liaison role between food technology department and food industry, and meet regularly with Industry Advisory Board members when the same is required
6.Assist in managing the resources available in Food Technology lab, and assist Food Technology department students while they conduct experiments/assignments in Food Technology lab
7.Participate and take part in discussions or meetings with food industry on food technology issues and provide necessary input
8.Facilitate industry visits for both faculty and students when required.
9.Any other duties as assigned by the Food Technology Program Manager.
1.At least a high school graduate; Bachelor degree in food technology or food science preferred.
2.Two years’ experience with Bachelor’s degree or four years’ experience with high school degree required.
3.Technical training in food microbiology, food chemistry, food safety, and other related skills desirable.
4.Demonstrated ability to work independently to achieve project objectives in a difficult environment
5.Ability to work with/collaborate with a diverse group to achieve program objectives
6.Positive, flexible attitude
7.Familiarity with Afghan agriculture, food industry, and markets
8.Fluency in English, Dari, and Pashto.
