Radio Technician (FSN-07) Trainee Level (FSN-06)
The Radio Technician is responsible for the daily maintenance of all UHF,VHF, and HF radio systems for the Embassy. The technician installs various types of radio equipment, such as repeaters, antennas, base stations, mobile radios, and mobile Inmarsat’s at various locations within the Embassy compound and off-site. The technician uses computerized radio service software to program and align a large variety and quantity of hand-held and mobile radios, repeaters, and consulate/base stations utilized by embassy employees. The Technician is in part responsible for the Embassy's Cable television network/system. Technician acts as translator between US embassy employees and Host country agencies. As well as secondary Telephone Technician in the absences of assigned Telephone Technician. Maintains radio equipment/ systems inventory.
VA 14-155 – Full Performance Level:
Education: Completion of high school is required. Post-secondary course work in electronics, electrical, RF/radio theory, technology, or any military communications, or manufacturer specific radio training is required.
Experience: Minimum two years of directly related, progressively responsible experience utilizing the knowledge, skills, and abilities in the field of radio network operation, maintenance, and repair.
VA 14-155T – Trainee Level:
Education: Completion of high school is required. Post-secondary course work in electronics, electrical, RF/radio theory, technology, or any military communications, or manufacturer specific radio training is required.
Experience: Minimum one year of progressively responsible experience, primarily of systems administration or technical nature where emphasis is place on LAN management and administration.
Language: Level 4 English ability is required; level 4 Dari ability is required.
Knowledge: Must have a thorough knowledge of safety practices and procedures; electronics, electrical, RF/radio theories and practices; installation, operation, maintenance, testing, troubleshooting, repair procedures and techniques for the equipment serviced. Cognitive of host country and Department of State radio standards and requirements.
Abilities and Skills: Must be able to read and interpret technical guidelines, schematic drawing, engineering plans, and specifications; troubleshoot simple to complex radio system malfunctions; operate test equipment; use hand and powered tools; and effectively communicate with other technicians. Must be able to work independently with minimum supervision.
