( Ministry of Agriculture) AAIP Project, Multi Location
Within this context, the project requires the services of four Regional Plant breeders, who will act as technical advisors to the staff at the ARIA station where they will be posted and assist them in ensuring a smooth implementation of all plant breeding and seed production related activities. They will also be responsible to take part and act as a trainer in any capacity building activity organized by the project at the specific or other stations.
Under the overall supervision of the Project Director, and in close collaboration with the International & National Agricultural Research Advisor/Plant Breeder, International and National Experimental Design Specialist/Statistician of AAIP, agricultural research staff of ARIA, CIMMYT and other ARIA research partners at the respective duty station:
Provide technical and scientific guidance in day-to-day management of the national variety trials and ensure adequate performance of:
Conduction of the variety maintenance program;
Selection of appropriate sites for optimum production of breeder seed;
Availability of all inputs in the right quantity, of the right quality and at the right times for efficient seed production;
The best agronomic practices in the field and post-harvest handling operations, including processing and packaging are used for breeder seed;
Conducting internal quality assurance measures as appropriate;
Close working practices with the seed certification service to ensure timely and appropriate field inspection, collection of seed samples, seed testing and availability of test results;
Proper management of seed storage to avoid quality deterioration and ensure effective breeder seed delivery to ARIA Stations when necessary;
He/she will also manage training of field level staff in essential technical aspects of breeder seed production, report to the Seed program Coordinator of AAIP, through the National Research Specialist and perform any other related tasks as required by the Project Director of AAIP.
University degree in Agriculture, preferably, in plant breeding, Agronomy or related field;
At least 2 years experience with MSc, and 4 years experience with BSc, in crop improvement, plant breeding or related activities,
Having at least one year working experience in quality seed production, maintenance, purification, storage, distribution and seed multiplication
Experience with the World Bank or other donor funded projects would be an asset
Excellent communication and report writing skills, Capacity to work under pressure and to meet strict deadlines,
Mature judgment combined with a proactive, resourceful and energetic approach to problem solving.
