Overall Purpose of the Role
Reporting to the Editor and Senior Content Producer, the freelance television presenter (male) will be one of two hosts of Open Jirga. Our 60-minute television production. The male presenter will engage on-screen with high profile policy makers, politicians and celebrities, to enable audience members to ask them questions while ensuring answers and an engaging debate. The on-screen presenter will interact directly with studio-based audiences from across Afghanistan, and he will conduct extensive research to develop program ideas and write & edit scripts for the main productions, as well as present/voice over trailers and cross promotional slots for television, radio and social media. The freelance presenter will work as part of a team of national and international BBC staff, and will be expected to follow and implement direction from the Editor and Senior Content Producer.
Main duties
Anchor a multi-camera and multi-platform debate series
Work comfortably with a female co-presenter
Interviewing, writing and on-screen presenting
Work on his research per programme
On the day of recordings work with the Editor, choosing the question and answers from audience and finalizing scripts
Assist the Editor in selecting and booking high profile panelists suitable for each episode
Help generate original ideas for on screen content
Work with colleagues to ensure audience insights are fed into the series
Work with project management to ensure project deliverables are delivered on time, to budget and BBC quality
Adhere to BBC Editorial Guidelines and BBC Industry Codes of Practice, and the observance of BBC’s Health and Safety Regulations
Desirable skills, knowledge and experience
Experience interacting with and holding the audience’s attention during the recoding of a large production
Experience working with social media
Experience editing camera scripts
Understanding of global media
Experience in working with people from diverse backgrounds
Essential skills, knowledge and experience
Experience interviewing high profile policy makers, politicians and celebrities
Excellent Pashto speaking, writing and reading ability
Proven English speaking, writing and reading ability
Understanding of Afghanistan's media and audiences
Ability to write to tight deadlines
Strong organisational skills and the ability to maintain a high standard of performance whilst under pressure
An awareness of BBC production quality and standards
