Job Summary

Translation Unit Manager under the overall supervision of IR3 Team Leader

Duties & Responsibilities

1. Perform written translation

Translate drafts and documents (i.e., correspondence, reports, documents, training materials, communication products, tools) in concise and culturally appropriate manner from English to Dari and from Dari to English as needed;

Provide translation support to the Program including clients, national counterparts (government and civil society) and other stakeholders;

Develop effective filing systems (electronic and physical) and file important documentation on a regular basis;

Prioritize, track, and organize progress of assigned materials;

Proofread documents drafted and/or translated by other translators and colleagues;

Provide guidance to international staff with respect to Afghan cultural and communication protocols; and

Perform other translation tasks as needed within the project implementation.
2. Perform verbal interpretation

When required, accompany the SIKA South international team to meetings and field missions, and provide interpretation in English and Dari;

Provide accurate interpretation during meetings, trainings, workshops, conferences and other relevant activities and events;

Provide guidance to international staff with respect to Afghan cultural and communication protocols; and

Provide other interpretation tasks as needed within the project implementation.

3. Assist and support international SIKA South staff to liaise with counterparts on substantive issues

Oversee the meeting preparation and reporting of meetings, such as taking minutes and preparing meeting reports, as requested;

Assist in making contacts and setting up meetings;

Assist in administrative and operational support associated to the translation work as requested; and

Perform other duties and responsibilities as required and necessary within the area of responsibility.

4. Understand and enforce the Program’s policy of zero tolerance for fraud and corruption.

Job Requirements

Bachelor\'s degree or higher in a social science or relevant technical field

Be a Dari speaker and have command over the English language to the extent needed for the job;

Be able to type Dari in addition to English;

Be proficient in Pashto in order to communicate with the Pashto speaking staff;

Have the ability to use computer programs Word, Excel and PowerPoint as the media for producing required outputs;

Held a similar Interpreter/Translator position for at least four years in Afghanistan

Ability to foster a collaborative, creative work environment for employees;

Past job experience on international development projects, especially USAID projects;

Superior verbal and written communications skills;

Demonstrated an ability to work both independently and in team settings;

Superior written and verbal proficiency in English and Dari required;

Residents of Kandahar Province strongly preferred.
