Islamic Relief Worldwide (IRW) is an international, non-profitable, non-governmental humanitarian relief organization with its head quarter in Birmingham, UK. It enjoys consultative status with the Economic and Social Council of the United Nations and is a signatory to the Code of Conduct for International Red Cross and red Crescent Moments and NGOs in Disaster Relief. Islamic Relief has been working in Afghanistan for more than 23 years, providing emergency relief and implementing life-changing development projects for some of the most vulnerable people in the country. Islamic Relief set up our first Afghanistan office in 1999. Since then, IRA continued providing assistances in emergency relief, food security, livelihood, education, health, nutrition, shelter, orphan sponsorship, Ramadan and Qurbani programmes.

Job Summary

Under the Direct Supervision of Livelihood Officer, the Incumbent will perform the following:

Duties & Responsibilities

• Work closely with project team to conduct livelihood assessment of target households (HH)s and identify sustainable income generation options.
• Support target HHs to develop their business plans for income generation activities.
• Assist project staffs in forming of Self-Help-Groups (SHG) by participation of target HHs’ guardians.
• Conduct regular training\workshops on resource mapping and other livelihoods relevant training to SHGs’ members based on project’s implementation plan.
• Assist in establishment of saving box for each SHG and training of group members on management of saving box. 
• Supervision of provision of productive assets and inputs to the target HHs at the field level.
• Conduct regularly visits and provision of required instructions to target HHs on utilization of productive assets and inputs.
• Facilitate market linkage and value chain activities of target households.
• Conduct market assessment to identify marketable professions in coordination with DoLSA.
• Assist selection of eligible trainees for vocational training classes.
• Assist establishment of vocational training classes at community level.
• Regular supervision of vocational training progress according to implementation plan.
• Assist in community awareness, identification of sustainable livelihood opportunities and initiation of income generation activities for target households.
• Monitoring of day-to-day livelihood activities of the project and preparation of progress report.
• Any other project relevant activities required by project management team.

Job Requirements

Functional Competencies:

·        Strong interpersonal and communication skills;

·        Excellent English written communication skills, with analytic capacity and ability to synthesize project outputs and relevant findings for the preparation of quality project reports;

·        Ability to speak, read and write technical and conversational English;

·        Ability to understand new terminology and concepts easily and to synthesize information from different sources into a coherent project document;

·        Skill in negotiating effectively in sensitive situations;

·        Skill in achieving results through persuading, influencing and working with others;

·        Skill in facilitating meetings effectively and efficiently and to resolve conflicts as they arise;

·        Maturity and confidence in dealing with senior and high-ranking members of international, regional and national institutions;

·        Displays sensitivity and adaptability to different cultures, genders, religions, races, nationalities and age groups;

·        Good oral communication skills and conflict resolution competency to manage inter-group dynamics and mediate conflicting interests of varied actors;

·        Good team player, and self-starter, has the ability to work under minimum supervision and maintain good relationships.

Education Required:

 A Bachelor’s degree in Agriculture preferably in Agriculture Extension, Agronomy, Horticulture, agribusiness, or livelihoods related fields. 

Experience and Skills Required:

 At least 2 to 3 years of demonstrated experience in the following:

·        Demonstrated experience in dealing with farming Communities in the fields of agriculture and community-based enterprises.

·        Proven experience in the formation of Farmers’ Self Help Groups and Community enterprises (Business hubs).

·        Demonstrated experience in the establishment of Farmers’ Field Schools, Demonstration plots, and Field days.

·        Strong knowledge and understanding sub-national institutional contexts of Afghanistan.

·        Experience in working with local government or NGOs on agriculture/livelihood-related activities in remote areas of Afghanistan.

Language Requirement:

Good working knowledge of Pashto, Dari, and English is required.

Computer Skills:

Good working knowledge of computer applications ( MS Office, outlook, internet etc. )
